Romania is home to over 60% of Europe’s last remaining old growth forests. The existence of these forest is still threatened by illegal logging, say both a report by the Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA) and official data: some 80 million m3 of wood was illegally logged in the country over the past 20 years, according to Romanian authorities, resulting in a loss of €5 billion.
Romania is now trying to protect its remaining forests with a new forest law, which is currently under debate in parliament. The law aims, among other things, to “limit any one company from utilizing more than 30% of a given species of wood in Romania”, says the EIA.
